Does Amoxicillin affect light sensitivity? I'm a beach bum and just got amoxicillin antibiotic, but not sure if it's ok if I stay out in the sun.

Jmarie replied: "I have always heard that it can, just depends on the person"

Bryanna replied: "im not sure im allergic but i know that if it has clendamycin then you can't get in the sun"

yugioht42 replied: "your good. since this medication doesn't do much but some words of advice avoid the salt water for a while since it doesn't fight the bacteria inside there."

isuSN replied: "Amoxicillin is not usually a photosensitive drug. You should be okay, just wear sunscreen (you should do that anyway). Side effects you should watch for are rash, nausea, vomitting, and itching."

I am recovering from an ear infection/sinus infection...i have been taking amoxicillin 875mg and pseudovent? for my sinus infection. The past few days my gums have been painful. They are raw and red on the back lower side of my mouth near the jaw. I am wondering if the ear infection caused the gum discomfort. I cant eat anything on my right side due to the sensitivity. My wisdom teeth have plenty of room to come in so it cant be that. Please help.

Dr. Albert, DDS (UNITED STATES) replied: "THERE ARE SEPARATE CONDITIONS HERE. FIRST THE EAR INFECTION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GUM ISSUE WHICH IS A SEPARATE PROBLEM. AT THIS POINT YOU MUST SEE A DENTIST FOR THE GUMS."

Nummy replied: "Try rinsing with warm water and salt. It will stink a bit and taste awful but it should help firm up your gums."

Which method should I use to treat back acne? (accutane, bactrim, amoxicillin)? The dermatologist recommended either accutane, bactrim, or amoxicillin at the very least. My complexion is very fair so I know using accutane and bactrim will increase my sensitivity to the sun. Basically she said if on either of those treatments that I should avoid sun as much as possible and seeing that summer is right around the corner that may be hard to do. So that leaves me with option #3, amoxicillin. Should I try amoxicillin first and see if that works or should I go straight to the heavier treatments? Luckily I have not started to scar yet and hopefully I can get this cleared up before that happens. Any suggestions ?

Tabby replied: "My derm perscribed tazorec which keeps the acne into remission for 3-5 years( i love it).I had to take amoxicillin for an infection and i broke out on my mouth with hives from a slight allergy."

gracelikerain_89 replied: "I was on bactrim and the sensitivity to the sun is not very extreme. Yes, you'll probably need to use a higher level of sunscreen but you won't need to head out to the beach in a full body wetsuit. Just make sure to keep your nose and shoulders lathered with sunscreen as they are more suceptible to burning."

sunflare63 replied: "throw all that away and get some dial antibacterial soap wash face good , foam up, rinse well with hot and then cold water, put aloe vera gel on afterwards."

fruit.nevermore replied: "If it's a pill you take, you should avoid bactim and amoxicillin. These are antibiotics, and they can cause other problems. For example, lots of people who take antibiotics constantly for acne end up with really persistent bad breath because the bacteria in their mouth change... If it's a cream then it's not such a big deal to use antibiotics all the time."

Ariamay replied: "go to the website I am giving you the link for. You will most likely be able to heal your outbreaks and control the issue with the Skintactix product line, WITHOUT putting some synthetic medication that isn't good for you in your system."

Penny Lane replied: "I would still recommend taking the Accutane first. It's true that you don't want to get the harmful rays from the sun, but that's what protective sunscreen is for! If your back acne is bad, I would go for the treatment that is proven to work. I wasted 10 years trying to use treatments other than Accutane and now, here I am, taking Accutane. I wish I could go back now and just start off using that treatment instead of dealing with annoying acne for a decade. Also, the sooner you start Accutane, the less you'll have to worry about scarring. Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky and am going to have to get lasar treatments to remove that to finally have clear skin. The risks of Accutane don't even come close to outweighing the benefits as long as you use the drug responsibly. I hope you're able to get your skin cleared up!"

Extreme Pain, Pressure and Sensitivity in molar...? At the beginning of the week I had extreme throbbing on the top left side of my mouth. Since I'm 26 weeks pregnant, my dentist refuses to treat me. So my family doctor is treating it as an abscessed tooth and prescribed me amoxicillin and tylenol 3 on Wednesday. Unfortunately its not helping much. Now for the past 2 days I have developed this real extreme pain, pressure and sensitivity in the back molar. It feels like if I could bust off the bottom of the tooth I could relieve all the pain and pressure. So my question is what do you think is going on in there? There is no cavity visible to my eye or feel. But I have had problems before with abscessed teeth because of facial trauma. The pain is so unreal - I need to find a dentist that will treat me during pregnancy because I can't keep going on like this. Also, any suggestions on how to relieve the pain? Thanks!

Cornish Granny replied: "I cannot believe that a dentist would not treat you as you are pregnant. Where are you, it wouldn't happen in the UK. If it did go to another dentist or phone NHS direct. It sounds like an abcess. Can't say what to suggest if you are elsewhere. But where I worked we treated ladies right up till they gave birth. Good Luck"

Higher dose of antibiotics? I have pain in a tooth i had root canal treatment on a couple of months ago. I went to dentist and got prescribed antibiotics but no change so went back and he has put me on a higher dosage and if the pain and sensitivity does not go by next week he will do the root canal again. I am just worried about taking the higher dosage and the side effects of taken too many antibiotics. Can anyone give me their experiences? The antibiotics are Amoxicillin and Metronidazole

archtyriel replied: "As long as the dosages are in an acceptable range it should be okay. You might try asking for morphene if the pain is too intense. You might also try to find a second opinion ask a dentist/doctor friend of yours what he/she thinks about the current dosage. Or go out and talk to another one."

Steve M replied: "Go to it's a very informative website. Or, phone NHS Direct and speak to a nurse about your problem. 0845 - 4647"

CCN replied: "antibiotics are very toxic, try to drink a lot of water because they effect your kidney"

samer s replied: "drink a lot of water 2-3 liters per day"

deepee replied: "There is not a problem taking the higher dosage. Clearly your dentist feels that you need the higher tissues so that it will penetrate the infection site. He won't be exceeding the recommended range so it won't be dangerous to you the only problem may be a higher risk of side effects. Sometimes particularly with dental infections you actually need much longer courses."

cavorim replied: "As far as I am aware they have to treat the infection before they can do the work. He is going to have to re-do the root canal anyway regardless of whether the pain goes because his work has clearly failed and if it is not sorted now it will turn into an abscess again (I know because I have had poor root canal fillings in the past). Don't worry too much about the antibiotics. We all end up taking too many of them but if you have a big infection you are going to have to take them. Garlic can be great against infections but when something has got established it an be difficult to shift. The best thing you can do when you have finished taking them is to take probiotic supplements for a month or so and make sure you eat plenty of vegetables to help your gut re-establish its beneficial bacterial balance. It might also be helpoful to take garlic supplements just to make sure the infection is gone and not coming back."

gettin'real replied: "Go to a reputable health food store & get some Milk Thistle (an herb) capsules. Thisilyn is the one that was used in European clinical trials. The stuff helps the liver to process the meds, which allows you to get the benefits with little or no side effects. "Side effects' is the polite term for the body's response to receiving more chemical input than it can process in it's usual timely manner. Toxicity causes these reactions. Take probiotics as well, to help replenish the body's supply of good intestinal flora that the antibiotics will always deplete. Good luck, and consider going to a periodontist, someone who specializes in root canals. When I had your experience, I did this. It was much more comfortable than the job the regular dentist did, and the results were great. Using homeopathic Arnica cream on the outside of the face, as well as pellets by mouth, and also Hypericum by mouth, you will notice a huge difference in pain relief. Take some of the Arnica prior to surgery, it soooooo helps. I've done it both ways, and I will never be without the alternative supports again. Best of health to you."

Sudden headache & neck pain? I had a flu like virus 5 weeks ago. It cleared up but left me with pain above one eye. I'm pretty sure it was sinusitis and after it didn't go away on it's own for a couple of weeks I went to the doctor and they prescribed me a weeks worth of amoxicillin. Well I think the pain above my eye has pretty much gone and I don't have a runny nose on that side anymore. However 2 days ago I was feeling ok and was about to take a shower when I suddenly experienced pain that felt a little like cramp in the back of my neck and head. It quickly built up over a couple of minutes and I felt very faint and slightly nauseous. The pain became really severe and I couldn't move my head/neck without severe neck pain. It subsided slowly over 48 hours and now I still have a stiff neck and some head pain which I'm managing with ibuprofen. However the last two nights I've been woken at 5am with intense head pain. I have no fever, rash or light sensitivity. Is this a sign of something serious?

justwondering replied: "Meningitis - if you can't touch your chin to your chest because of the stiffness. But that moves much faster than you report. I would go back to the doctor."

Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information available at"

Unbearable pain in upper molar after filling...HELP!!? Two weeks ago I had a filling for a deep cavity. I've never had a cavity/filling before, so I wasn't sure what to expect for the discomfort afterward. The first few days I felt some mild sensitivity to hot/cold but that was about it. After the first week, the pain spread to my entire jaw and cheek. It was so painful that it was interrupting my daily life. I went back to the dentist a few days ago, and he took X-rays to find that nothing was wrong. The entire tooth looked fine and he said the pain is probably just an irritated pulp horn or nerve. He prescribed me some Amoxicillin to keep any infection at bay. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that I'm allergic to Amoxicillin. So here I am, a few days later, still in even MORE extreme pain in my tooth, with a face rash. The pain is so bad in my tooth (severe pressure, and ultra sensitive to ANY touch) that I'm contemplating going to the ER. Is this pain normal, and will it go away on it's own, or do I need a root canal or worse? My dentist said to take Advil and Tylenol every 4 hours alternately because together they act as a mild narcotic, but so far, no relief. I can barely drink, cannot eat, and sleeping has become very difficult. If anyone has experienced this kind of intense pain after a filling, or has any helpful advice, I'd appreciate it! Thank you guys. Miraculously, the pain is starting to dispurse, and I can actually eat and drink again. It's still sore at nights and first thing in the morning, but I guess my medicinal treatment finally paid off. For those of you suffering with pain like this, just hang in there!!

shadowkid992 replied: "Morphine."

King Arjun replied: "go to ur dentist again...sme tine there is sme ting worn..there...dont take any pain killers to resuce ur pain....just visit ur dentist as soon as possible"

xjoizey replied: "Don't go to an ER , Go back to your dentist. Two weeks is too long to have that kind of pain. Have him check it again and give you a prescription for pain meds."

1 yr old cat with blood in urine - not a UTI or bladder infection - as per the vet? Hi Everyone, I was looking for some insight. I noticed blood in my cats urine and noticing she was going into the box alomost hourly but not peeing much at all so I figured I would bring her in to the vets (where I also got her at my local town animal hospital). They did a urinalysis and a sensitivity culture. One confirmed the blood in the urine. The same day I brought her I picked her up and they sent me home w/amoxicillin in a liquid to give her ever 12 hours. That was on a monday. I had been feeding her wet and dry food and treats every so often prior to this. Everyone thought it may be a UTI or bladder infect. When the 2nd test results came back it confirmed "no infection"..so he said that it could be stones, polyps or crystals and if it happens again to bring her back for xrays and/or ultrasound....BUT to take her off dry food altogether - no moisture from it so we will be better. He also said to finish the medicine. I asked him about dental issues w/out dry food because I was told that it gets off placque and tartar from their teeth, he said that wasn't proven. Since I've taken her off dry she seems much much better...so whaterver it was who knows. Has anyone experienced this w/their cats? Also, can anyone recommend a wet food brand for UTI's besides Pro-Plan? I'm wondering if they would still help even thought that's not what she had.....They all told me to make sure she gets alot of water, exercise and she's not very playful on her own so it's hard to find toys that she likes. Thank you, Linda

Christine~ Here to help replied: "Wet food is so much better for kitties! I am glad you can see this too. I am also so glad to see this information is getting out there-my previous cat developed diabetes and eventually died because of a dry food diet. My cat now is on an almost all wet food diet (she is a new cat and hides a lot still so it makes it hard for her to eat on a schedule, but she will be on completely wet in a week or so). And your vet is right-dry food doesn't clean the teeth. It's like a dentist telling you to eat a pretzel to clean your teeth. As for brands, the one with the most real meat is best and no grains. Cats are obligate carnivores and need meat to survive. I would reccomend: Innova EVO (one of the best on the market), Wellness, Calafornia Naturals and Go! Natural (grain free)."

lgdubya replied: "Your vet is right. Dry food is NOT proven to clean teeth. It cleans teeth no more than us humans eating crackers cleans our teeth. The ONLY 3 things possible that clean cats (or dogs) teeth is brushing the teeth with a toothbrush and special toothpaste, feeding them raw meaty bones or going to the vet and putting them under to clean the teeth. Also, dry food is linked to other health problems such as obesity, diabetes, UTI's, renal failure, etc. The negatives of dry food really outweigh the positive. I do not feed any dry food to my cats after doing much, much research. I am not sure how amoxicillin will get rid of anything if they said no infection was found. Amoxicillin is an antibiotics specifically for infection. If you are able, could you take her to another vet for a second opinion? I probably wouldn't let them do another urinalysis as that is rather stressful for the cat. You'll want to feed a higher quality wet food as Pro Plan is a lower quality and I'll point out why. Also, the Urinary form of the food only comes in 1 flavor and I promise you your cat will get sick of that same 1 flavor day in and day out very soon. Here are Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health Formula canned food ingredients: Water sufficient for processing, meat by-products, chicken, wheat gluten, corn starch-modified, natural and artificial flavors, soy flour, potassium chloride, taurine, tricalcium phosphate, salt, caramel color, Vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin A supplement, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), niacin, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), copper sulfate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, cobalt carbonate, potassium iodide, biotin. B-4664 By products are parts of the animal not deemed for human consumption. As you can see, they don't even mention what animal, it just says meat. That could be anything. By products normally consist of feathers, beaks, head, feet, diseased meats. Wheat gluten is the cause for thousands of loved pets dying or becoming very unhealthy back in the 2007 mass recall of pet food. Soy flour is unnecessary. Salt is unnecessary. Any coloring is unnecessary. You will want to feed canned foods that do not contain by products, corn (maize, same thing as corn), soy, coloring, salt, sugar, gluten of any kind. You will also want a canned food that has a meat as the first or second ingredient, first is more favorable. High quality canned includes AvoDerm Select Cuts, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Wellness, Weruva, Evo, Merricks, Wysong, Newman's Own, Petsmart's Authority and there are others. These in general are more expensive but you will end up saving as, since you'll be feeding higher quality food, you won't have anymore expensive vet trips."

How do I know if it has spread to my brain? HELP!? I have to get a root canal in one of my back teeth and there is a little red bump on the gum near the tooth, but that tooth doesn't hurt at all. My front tooth was KILLING me so I went to the dentist, he said that the nerve was dead and he drilled a hole in the back of the tooth, put some medicine in it, and covered it with a temporary filling. I've been taking some antibiotics for a week that I got from the ER for a really bad cold/flu. My front tooth is still hurting very badly and it's extremely sensitive, I can't bite down on anything and NOTHING can touch that tooth or it starts throbbing, so I haven't been able to eat much for the past few days. He gave me some pain medicine but it doesn't help at all with the sensitivity. Why is my tooth STILL hurting? My upper lip also feels swollen and I can't really move it or "lick" my lips(Idk if i'm explaining that very well...oh well. ) Do I need to get antibiotics from the dentist, or will the antibiotics from the ER help the tooth. *My anitibiotics are called amoxicillin susp 400mg* Also, I've heard that an abcessed tooth can spread to your brain and kill you. I've been having headaches lately and a little dizziness(I'm guessing the dizziness is from the pain medicine and not eating as much as I'm used to? The pain medicine is Vicodin...). How can I tell if the infection/abcess has spread to my brain? I'm really scared! D:

Melody replied: "If it had spread to your brain, you'd know it. You'd be very ill, and go into a coma and possibly die. Since the dentist wasn't too worried after he saw the tooth, odds are that it is just a bad tooth and nothing more. But if you want to make sure, you could have the tooth x-rayed."

traveler65 replied: "It is actually the lining of the brain rather than the brain itself that can become infected. In order for infection to spread from a tooth to the brain lining it will have had to entered your blood stream. Infection in the blood stream presents with HIGH fever greater than 102 degrees. If it has indeed reached the lining of the brain the headache you would feel is unlike any other headache the pain would be unbearable. One test is to try tucking your chin down to your chest. This movement causes the brain lining to stretch and if they are infected that stretch would be unbearably painful (you would never get your chin tucked down that far to your chest because it would just hurt too much). You would not feel clear enough in your thought processes to be on the computer asking this question so for now your brain is safe! Yay!!! Please please please do not take an old antibiotic....different antibiotics are prescribed for different types of infections so you should always see a doctor for an antibiotic. Also leftover antibiotics means you do not have the full proper dosage and risk creating in your system an infection that is actually stronger and more resistant to an antibiotic that could have destroyed it before. Yes the dizziness is more than likely caused by the vicodin and lack of eating ....eat soft foods that won't require biting down ...scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soup....and avoid extreme hot or cold things as they are painful to the nerves of the tooth. Go see your dentist again or a doctor. Good luck to you."

Can taking antibiotics while breastfeeding cause diarrhea in a newborn? PLEASE LIST SOURCES, IF AVAILABLE: My son is almost 5 weeks old. 2 1/2 weeks ago I developed a severe case of mastitis which sent me to the emergency room. Both my obstetrician and my son's pediatrician recommended a 10-day course of antibiotics. I am allergic to penicillin and amoxicillin, so my OB prescribed clarythmycin (which he said is more likely to cause diarrhea for me than the PCN or Amox). Shortly before the course of antibiotics was complete, my son began to have diarrhea with a small amount of blood in his stool. The pediatrician said that it was likely a food sensitivity. I am curious, though, if it the timing is coincidental. I am also in contact with an excellent lactation consultant who said that it is unlikely but possible. She and I are contemplating whether treating him with probiotics might be an option in this scenario. If you are familiar with this subject, please share your expertise. Thank you!! I'm sorry for the typo, but the antibiotic was Clindamycin... as there is no such thing as clarythmycin. Sorry!

pipsqueek replied: "16 years ago I was nursing my daughter and had to take a strong antibiotic. I can't remember which one but I think it ended in ...mycin (and there are several, so it very well may not have been what you took). It tore her stomach apart. The pediatrician wasn't at all surprised and called the other doc to change to something less irritating to the baby's stomach. Can't remember what it was changed to (sorry, it was a long time ago). But it definitely is possible with some antibiotics."

Jules replied: "I developed an infection after my c-section and was taking clindamycin for 2 weeks, (first intraveneously, then orally, so the dose was immediately absorbed). When we took her for her first checkup, I mentioned that she was having a lot of runny stools. The pediatrician asked me if I was taking any medicine and then mentioned that it's difficult to tell if a breastfed newborn has diarrhea, however the clindamicyn can definitely cause it."

Jaiden Eats At Mommy's replied: "HUGE list and information on medications while breastfeeding! Wayyy too much to copy and paste : ***Let me add that kellymom has forums full of BFing moms who have probably experienced similar problems. I'd pop in there and ask about this as well! Here's "Your Diet and Health" as an example of a forum to try as well as a post by moderators on medications"

Mary C replied: "I have no expertise in this area, but was very interested in your question, as it touched on my history with breastfeeding. I, too, got mastitis from an injury while breastfeeding. My doctor was not overly concerned with the mastitis. He said that the best thing to cure it was vigorous breastfeeding. Within a few days the mastitis went away. This may not be the most current thinking on the subject as I am talking about 35 years ago! As far as your own situation...I would sure be looking to the antibiotic as the cause of your little one's diarrhea. If your are taking it, he is sure getting it as well. Hey! That's why breastfeeding women are not supposed to drink alcohol! I'm surprised that your doctor and the lactation consultant were not suspicious of the antibiotic. But what do I know? Hope everything is okay now."

Ian's Mommy replied: "I'm on cephalexin -antibiotic from my obgyn- right now to help prevent bronchitis and breastfeeding my 13 month old. My ob/gyn and son's pedi said that the antibiotics shouldn't affect my son in any way, shape, or form. I wouldn't think they'd reccomend something that could affect your son, but with a baby that small and breastfeeding (in my experience) it was difficult to tell when he was having diarrhea because breastfed babys are known for having loose and runny stools to begin with. I would definately talk to his pedi agian though and she was she has to say about the clarythmycin. Best of luck and congrats on choosing to nurse!"

mystic_eye_cda replied: "Hale seems to be against its use but I can't find a copy of what his book actually says. The infant's stools were reported to have normal flora and the stools became guaiac negative 24 hours after discontinuation of breastfeeding. On day 6 of age, the infant resumed breastfeeding after discontinuation of maternal antibiotics with no further difficulties.[6] Clindamycin Cleocin Approved B L3 * Clindamycin Dose: 450mg four times a day for 5 days Active against Gram-positive aerobes and most anaerobes. Used as a second choice when individuals cannot tolerate usual therapy. Side-effects: * common - diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting * rare - anaphylaxis, blood dyscrasias, jaundice Use in lactating women with caution, may cause loose bowel actions in baby. One report of bloody diarrhoea in infant of mother given intravenous clindamycin.
